New Zenith Defy Extreme Chroma Editions
Zenith is solidifying the Defy Extreme collection as the flagship of its modern chronograph technology: high frequency, modular construction, and a distinctively modern design.
Zenith continues to innovate its high-frequency El Primero chronograph movement platform, introducing two new timepieces that perfectly blend the brand’s core technological features with a more vibrant and architectural use of color. The Defy Extreme Chroma Limited Edition marks the next phase of the Chroma concept, which debuted in 2022 with the Defy 21 Chroma and launched the Chroma II collection in 2023. This time, the design breaks free from the limitations of ceramic cases, employing a hybrid of titanium and ceramic, and housing Zenith’s most advanced El Primero 9004 chronograph movement.
The Chroma version of the Defy Extreme retains the collection’s iconic 45mm case design, with sharp lines, distinct angles, and a multi-layered structure. One model features a micro-blasted titanium case with black accents; the other combines a brushed and polished titanium case with a white ceramic bezel, crown, and pusher guards. Both are highly recognizable as part of the Defy series: a dodecagonal bezel, prominent pushers, and a robust construction ensuring 200-meter water resistance. The clever combination of titanium and ceramic not only enhances the visual contrast but also reduces the watch’s weight, making it more comfortable to wear.

The skeletonized dial serves as both an interface and a window to the inner El Primero 9004 movement. The multi-layered structure clearly showcases the gear train, bridges, and sub-dials without compromising legibility. The bridges, coated with PVD, exhibit a rainbow gradient effect, forming the visual axis that extends outwards to the various inlays. The hour markers are rhodium-plated and faceted, filled with a rainbow gradient lacquer whose hue gradually changes along the dial’s edge, becoming softer at the bottom and more vibrant at the outer edge.
The hands are equally exquisite: multifaceted, rhodium-plated, and coated with Super-LumiNova for enhanced legibility against the openworked dial. The central chronograph seconds hand, rotating once per second, is the visual focal point of the watch, its high-speed movement highlighting its 1/100th of a second precision. Surrounding it are the chronograph minute subdial at 3 o’clock, the chronograph seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, the small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, and the chronograph power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock. The tips of the hands on each subdial echo the gradient color of that subdial, creating a perfect blend of color and function.
As mentioned earlier, both watches are powered by the El Primero 9004 movement, a caliber that defines the direction of Zenith’s modern technology. Its double escapement configuration, one oscillating at 5 Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour) and the other at 50 Hz (360,000 vibrations per hour), allows for timing with precision down to 1/100th of a second. The central chronograph seconds hand completes one rotation of the dial every second, producing a unique mechanical rhythm that has become the movement’s visual signature. With a 50-hour power reserve, an independent mainspring barrel ensures stable torque for each power train gear.
Both watches come with three interchangeable straps: a rubber strap matching the case color, a titanium bracelet, and a black Velcro strap. The Defy Extreme’s standard quick-release system allows for easy strap changes without tools.
