Is the new Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01678 the most stylish "Bronzo" to date?
Fourteen years ago, in 2011, Panerai launched its first Bronzo watch: the Submersible Bronzo PAM00382. This timepiece featured a deep green dial and a 47mm bronze case, which, when exposed to natural light, would gradually develop a patina of bronze upon initial warm golden hue. The Bronzo watch was an instant hit.
The original Bronzo set a trend, pushing bronze to the forefront of fashion and showcasing a case that developed a unique texture and character over time. Since then, numerous Bronzo watches have been produced. Today, we focus on the latest model, perhaps the most elegant Bronzo to date: the Luminor Marina PAM01678, which for the first time perfectly blends bronze with Panerai’s iconic Luminor Marina design.
The original Bronzo had a 47mm diameter, while this latest Bronzo adopts Panerai’s iconic 44mm size, beloved by many brand enthusiasts (or Paneristi). The case is 13.7mm thick, with a lug spacing of 54.3mm, making it undeniably more striking on the wrist. I believe most collectors won’t find the 13.7mm thickness too bulky, but the 54.3mm lug spacing means those with smaller wrists should try it on before purchasing. However, if you already own and love a 44mm Panerai, you’ll definitely love this new Bronzo.
As you’d expect from a Panerai, the PAM01678 is a very robust and durable watch, water-resistant to 500 meters, and equipped with Panerai’s signature crown guard, requiring the crown guard to be lifted before operation, further ensuring its safety. The case features a full brushed finish, creating a rugged, tool-watch-like character. However, bronze, composed of pure copper and tin, endows the watch with an elegant and noble texture. But over time, it quickly develops a unique patina, showcasing a distinctive personal charm and making each owner’s timepiece a unique bespoke piece. Some brands have developed bronze alloys that can completely suppress patina formation. However, Panerai has not shied away from the unique charm inherent in bronze itself, but rather transformed it into a characteristic of the watch, rather than a defect of the material.
The bronze case paired with a matte blue dial once again demonstrates the balance between the watch’s elegant temperament and professional tool watch functions. The rich smoky blue tone is undoubtedly suitable for a dress watch, while the matte finish prevents it from being overly reflective, also fulfilling its practical tool watch function. Beige Super-LumiNova luminous coating adorns the hands and hour markers: employing a sandwich dial structure, the lower part of the dial is covered with a full sheet of beige Super-LumiNova luminous coating, providing a stronger and brighter luminous effect in the dark, maximizing the watch’s legibility and perfectly matching its professional diving watch positioning.
The new Bronzo watch draws inspiration from its classic 1960s models, omitting the date function at 3 o’clock. This results in an exceptionally clean and pure dial, with only hour and minute hands in the center and a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock. The Luminor Marina logo at 12 o’clock, the Panerai brand logo at 6 o’clock, and the "L Swiss L" lettering below are all in a beige tone, perfectly complementing the Super-LumiNova luminescent coating and harmonizing with the bronze case’s luster.

Of course, the case will age over time, but even so, the overall style will not be disrupted, as the darkening of the case, in certain aspects or situations, will complement the smoky hue of the dial. All of this appears to be carefully considered, reflecting Panerai’s rich experience and successful track record in bronze watch design: for a brand with such a deep maritime tradition, this is undoubtedly a natural outcome.
This watch comes with a calfskin strap that matches the dial color, which seems somewhat unexpected considering the water compatibility of leather. However, a rubber strap matching the dial color is also included in the package. This means you have a strap option suitable for water adventures right out of the box. However, the PAM01678 does not use Panerai’s PAM Click strap release system, so you’ll need to change the strap in the traditional way.
Through the hypoallergenic titanium transparent case back, you can see the new P.980 movement inside. This is an automatic movement with a 3-day power reserve, so you don’t have to worry about battery life even on weekends. Its design aims for better case proportions and superior robustness. The balance wheel is fixed in a full-bridge structure for enhanced shock resistance and is adjusted in six positions to ensure accurate timekeeping.
It should be noted that I did not showcase this watch in the video review above or in the pictures in this article: my wrist circumference is approximately 6.5 inches (about 16.5 cm), and the 54.3 mm lug spacing might be a bit large for me. That said, for the many watch enthusiasts around the world who have long cherished Panerai’s large-size watches, I suspect many will be looking for a way to wear this timepiece during the holidays. Its smoky blue dial is handsome and elegant, and as I said, it complements the case perfectly even over time. The combination of beige and bronze is harmonious, showcasing both Italian elegance and the robust, durable tool watches that Panerai is renowned for. In conclusion, I believe the PAM01678 is another masterpiece in Panerai’s bronze collection.
